Lewis Hamilton wins British GP to close in on Schumacher’s record.
Lewis Hamilton maintained his British Grand Prix victory on Sunday despite a puncture in the last lap to clinch his 87th victory in his career and close four to Michael Schumacher’s record.
Silverstone’s captain’s seventh victory, a record, saw him six seconds before Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who unexpectedly moved into place after Hamilton’s teammate Mercedes Valtteri Bottas sustained a pucture with three laps remaining.
When his tire melted, Bottas had to return to change his tire and knocked out points altogether to 11th place and 30 points behind Hamilton in the title race. Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel is 10th and has now failed to reach the top five in his worst start since the 2008 season. McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. also had a puncture in the last lap and slipped to 13th.
Charles Leclerc finished third with Ferrari, with Daniel Ricciardo fourth in the Renault improvement and British driver Lando Norris in fifth place for McLaren. “It was a very difficult race,” Leclerc said after the second podium this season. “I am very happy with how I manage tires from start to finish.”
AlphaTauri’s Hass driver Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat were both unharmed after crashing early in the 52-lap race. There is another race in Silverstone this coming Sunday, as Pirelli may adjust its tire selection. Read more.
